Voice and Text Mutes

Which voice and chat resources MonoAdmin's mutes work with, and what the panel shows when your server cannot apply a mute.

A mute is a punishment that stops a player talking, in voice chat or in text chat, for a time you choose. Your server applies it, so how well it works depends on the voice and chat resources you run. This page says which ones MonoAdmin can mute, what is not covered, and what the panel shows when your server cannot apply a mute.

What a Mute Does

You issue a mute from the panel, as Mute Voice or Mute Text (or Mute in Issue Punishment, where you choose Voice chat or Text chat). The player can be muted for 10 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days or Until lifted. The full steps are on Punishments, and the rules for how mutes behave over time are on Warnings, Mutes and Community Service.

On your server, the resource:

  • applies the mute when it is issued, if the player is online,
  • applies it again when the player rejoins,
  • lifts it when it ends, when staff revoke it, and when the resource stops,
  • keeps a muted player muted while the cloud is unreachable, from the local copy.

If the player is offline or your game server is offline when you issue it, the mute is saved and applies on their next join or when the server reconnects.

Voice Mutes

Voice mutes use FiveM’s built-in Mumble voice. The resource mutes the player with the server’s own Mumble call. When pma-voice is running, it also sets pma-voice’s muted state on the player, so that its client agrees.

Voice setup Voice mute
FiveM’s built-in Mumble voice Supported
pma-voice Supported (checked with pma-voice 7.0.1)
A voice resource that does not run on FiveM’s Mumble voice Not covered

MonoAdmin offers the voice mute on every server, because the server’s Mumble call is always there. It cannot tell which voice resource you run. If your voice resource does not use Mumble, the mute is recorded, but the player may not actually be silenced. Test a mute with two accounts after you set MonoAdmin up.

Spectating

While a staff member is spectating a player in game, the staff member’s own voice is switched off, so the player they are watching does not hear them. It uses the same voice mute, and comes back when the spectate ends. A punishment mute and a spectate hold do not undo each other: ending one never lifts the other.

Text Mutes

Text mutes work with the default chat resource that ships with FiveM. While a player is text-muted, the messages they type into chat are dropped before anyone sees them, and MonoAdmin does not send the player a notice in chat. The mute is available only while chat is started. Detection runs again when chat starts or stops.

What a text mute does not cover:

  • Other chat resources. A chat resource that replaces the default chat is not covered, and the panel shows the text mute as unavailable.
  • Chat commands from other resources. Commands that other resources register, such as esx_rpchat’s /me, /do, /twt, /anontwt and /msg, are not blocked.

Text mutes are applied in the default chat’s own message hook, which runs before other chat handlers. On the default ESX setup that includes esx_rpchat, so ordinary messages typed into chat are stopped. The final check, that a text-muted message is dropped for another player on a live ESX server with esx_rpchat, has not yet been done with two players. Check it yourself too.

What the Panel Shows When a Mute Is Unavailable

The panel only lets you issue what your server reported it can do.

Where What you see
Issue Punishment, with Mute selected A warning reading “This server’s resource can’t mute voice chat.” (or “text chat”), and the confirm button is disabled.
Mute Voice and Mute Text on a player’s profile The tile is greyed out. Its hint reads “Not available for this server’s framework or resource version.”
A mute that the server refuses anyway “The game server’s resource does not support this.”

The text mute becomes unavailable when chat is not started. After you start it, the panel catches up by itself, because the resource reports its new abilities when detection runs again. You do not need to relink.

Making Mutes Work on Your Server

  • Voice: there is nothing to configure. Use FiveM’s built-in Mumble voice or pma-voice.
  • Text: keep the default chat resource started. If you moved to a different chat resource, text mutes stop being available.
  • After changing voice or chat resources, open a player’s profile to see what was detected. If Mute Text is not greyed out, the default chat resource was found.
